Kai Strobel

And so it is with great satisfaction that a jury can say: “Polished, musically intelligent and mature. Experience and control and great lines, full of details”.

18 November 2018, 26-year-old Kai Strobel from Germany won the First Prize in the TROMP International Percussion Competition in Eindhoven - plus the award for the best rendition of a Dutch work. He was already a laureate of the German Jugend Musiziert competition and had won First Prize and the Audience Award at the Percussive Linz International Marimba Competition 2015. In addition, he reached the semi-finals of the international ARD Music Competition at age 22. Be prepared for an afternoon of vibrant percussion!

In this solo recital Kai performs a selection of the competition repertoire that earned him a spot in the TROMP Finale and that shows his versatile musicianship. His programme ranges from elegantly Bach to virtuosic marimba perfomances, and jazzy vibraphone to thunderous drums. He concludes the concert with the new compulsory work Cinderella for the TROMP 2018 Semi Finals, written by Mayke Nas, Composer Laureate of the Netherlands from 2016 to 2018. Cinderella plays with the illusion of someone trying to dance on high heels.

Programme:

Johann Sebastian Bach- selection from Suite for Lute
Emmanuel Séjourné - Attraction
Federico Chueca - Los Paraguas
Vincent Houdijk - Mapa
Iannis Xenakis - Rebonds A
Mayke Nas - Cinderella
