Beat the rhythm, feel the rhythm, make and experience raw and unpolished music together.
TROMP Percussion beats on barrels is an educational participation project for secondary schools in the Eindhoven region as part of TROMP International Percussion 2012.

With this project TROMP aims to enthuse and activate the participants to learn about music, almost unconsciously. To learn what it feels like to make music yourself. Due to its accessibility, percussion is perfectly suited for this. Learning about percussion together connects those involved and proves that making music can be a truly expressive outlet.



The group Circle Percussion will be involved in the realization of this project, which consists of various educational elements and a large-scale finale concert. There will also be a special Beats & Barrels talent programme. A core group will be selected and offered an intensive series of lessons with Circle Percussion.

During an interactive preliminary period, the students will have access to instruction videos on YouTube explaining the basics. Not in an ‘old-fashioned’ way, but with a new, fresh twist: instead of uninspiring repetition, they will immediately be able to play along with one or more of the Circle Percussion musicians. Various different YouTube educational projects are being developed, each with its own rhythm and breaks, in preparation for the collective workshops at school.  
During the collective workshops at school, the students will make music using large plastic oil barrels of varying size. These will also be used during the presentation concert. The fact that the musical material has already been covered in the preliminary YouTube lesson means that the workshops can immediately focus on performance, sound, tempo and dynamic. Each participant will be able to create music at his/her own level. 

The huge finale, including presentations from all the schools involved, will take place during the Tromp Competition in and around the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven on Saturday 3 November from 12:00.

TROMP Beats & Barrels | Talent class

As competition organiser, TROMP is a promoter of talent and therefore always interested in the development and stimulation of talent at all levels. The TROMP Beats & Barrels talent class offers an individually focused workshop project for talent in the making. A project that reaches much further than the usual introductory workshops. With intensive training and guidance, attention for the individual and a ‘peek’ into the professional world of musicians, these dedicated trainers/musicians provide a significant talent boost.

The project

Several motivated and talented students will be selected and during a period of 4 weeks they will follow an intensive training project using the special Japanese instruments of Circle Percussion. During this intensive training project, the learning does not stop after class. The students are also given tasks to complete at home, using social media. Another important element is an introduction to the professional world of the musician. In September/October, all participants will be given the opportunity to experience a performance, including all that goes with it (stage preparation, sound check, clearing up etc.) from behind the scenes.

These talented individuals will perform with Circle Percussion during the Tromp Competition in the large-scale finale, in which all participating schools will be presented, taking place in and around Muziekgebouw Eindhoven on Saturday 3 November from 12:00.
