Born and raised in Hong Kong, James Koo began studying Chinese and Western percussion at the age of 6. He completed his Bachelor of music at the Boston Conservatory and recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a Masters of music. He will begin his Doctoral studies at the University of California San Diego under the guidance of Distinguished Professor Steven Schick. As a performer he has appeared on the 2023 PASIC as part of their World Percussion lineup and he gave a concerto performance with the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra. He has received prizes in the Black Swamp competition and at the Chicago International Music Festival.
